May 6-10

We are doing activities in class that require that the students bring their required materials. Some students are not prepared.  Please be sure that your student comes to class with: pencils, scissors, glue, and colored pencils. Thank you for your attention to this.

English

Spelling Words: live, places, people, house, high, below, home, different, shapes, because.
Our students are learning about descriptive writing. They will write an essay describing themselves, and another that describes a house.

A good reading practice website is at www.starfall.com.

Math

We are still learning about graphs. Your student can make a bar graph in this game.

Bar graphs can be used to show and compare information. Here is a bar graph that tells about the UAE's economic growth.

Science

The boys are enjoying learning about camouflage. We have watched videos of camouflaged animals.

You can watch them HERE and HERE.  Amazing! In class we played a game where the students tried to color butterflies and find a place to give them camouflage.

Thank you parents who came to our Parent Teacher night! We hope the students will use their learning from this year to have a great third trimester.

We have been learning about the elements of a story. This week, your students are creating and writing stories of their own. Here is a site where they can practice, and see other stories written by children: http://www.kidscom.com/create/write/write.html. We are still reading "Hippo's Toothache" for our reading book.

This week's spelling words are: coral, tooth, ache, graph, data, tally, vine, cliff, moan, groan.

Extra reading practice: find your child's reading level and read with him. http://www.starfall.com/n/level-a/learn-to-read/load.htm?f

Math

Last week's topic was graphs. This week, students are now learning about pictographs. A pictograph is a graph that uses pictures. Here is a pictograph game for kids: http://www.softschools.com/math/data_analysis/pictograph/games/.

Be sure to check the key before reading the graph!

Science

In science, students are learning the difference between plants and animals. Next week, the students will learn about animals that can use camouflage.

We have talked about corals, which are animals. Here are some pictures of corals: http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photos/coral-kingdoms/#.

We also have learned about plants that can eat animals, like the Venus Flytrap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJpgMDOZInA&feature=related.
